Humans have always favored the visual media. From cave paintings to monumental sculpture, mankind has sought ways to recreate the images of the world around him and through art, the things of his imagination. Art is however, a subjective form of expression and all such early images, no matter how carefully crafted, were not true representations. This began to change in the nineteenth century as the photographic process began to be developed.

Photography is the process whereby a light sensitive chemically treated surface was exposed to light through a focusing lens. The exposed film could then be processed with other chemicals to permanently stain the unlit areas so an image would appear.

The process has continually improved to the point that now photographs can be taken directly to a digital format through the use of a Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor (CMOS) chip or a Charge Coupled Device (CCD).

Historically, the photograph (light picture) was first produced by the Frenchman, Joseph Nicphore Nipce in 1826 with the use of silver and chalk as a substrate. The idea of capturing live images propelled the inventiveness of others. Louis Daguerre brought photography to the next level with his use of specially treated metal plates being used instead of glass. While the image was delicate and could degrade over time, the daguerreotype set an impressive standard for photographic imaging.

The next great developments in photography occurred in the mid eighteen hundreds in the process of finding the right types of paper and chemical mixes. The collodion process used a glass plate negative that could transfer the image to albumen paper. The gelatin process of photography appeared in 1871 and is still the most often used process for black and white photography.

While color photography has been possible ever since the process was created, the efficiency of color reproduction lagged behind black and white image making. It was not until 1903 that Autochrome Lumire was revealed to the public. With the right direction in research finally discovered, the Autochrome was soon replaced by the more effective Kodachrome. As these systems became for accurate in their color representation and ease of processing, color photography has become the state of the art and over 95 of all photographs taken in the world today are done with color.

Photographs are no longer exclusively limited to photographic paper. The early etching process and them the lithographic printing process developed ways to break the varying shades of gray into dot patterns that allowed photographs to be reproduced quickly and effectively. Newspapers quickly took up this ability and have made photojournalism a distinguished profession. It is through them that we see a picture can truly be worth a thousand written words.

Motion picture photography has added another dimension to the photographic repertoire. By exposing a series of still pictures and replaying them at speed, the image so projected gives the illusion of movement. The movie industry has been a prime source of improved photographic development ever since it began.

Now that computers have emerged as the most powerful source of information on the planet, photography has evolved to take full advantage of the digital age. There are more digital cameras now than there are analog cameras. Imaging programs can modify and enhance existing photographs for greater details or artistic effects.

Digital photographs do not even need to be printed but can be saved in image files on computer hard drives or Compact Disks and viewed on screen. Color jet and laser printers can produce a hard copy of your photograph that is almost indistinguishable from a chemically treated photograph.

Care sunt diferentele intre gazduire shared, vps si server dedicat? Ei bine, sunt destule si foarte importante. Este foarte important sa stii pentru ce anume vrei sa folosesti aceasta gazduire pe internet.

1. Gazduire shared sau virtuala este acel hosting care iti permite sa pui cateva pagini (html, php, etc.) pe web fara a avea pretentii ca situl tau sa fie super performant. In general gazduirea virtuala este OK atunci cand ai pagini statice fara baze de date in backend sau alte fisiere mari de descarcat. Trebuie sa tinem seama ca un cont de hosting shared imparte spatiul si resursele de pe server cu alte zeci, sute si chiar mii de alte situri. Depinzand de optimizarea serverului respectiv, activitatea celorlalte situri si numarul de vizitatori pe server, poti avea rezultate mai mult sau mai putin satisfacatoare. As recomanda acest gen de gazduire celor care au situri mici si cu putini vizitatori. Partea buna este ca hostingul virtual este destul de ieftin incepand de la cativa dolari lunar.

2. Gazduirea VPS (Virtual Private Server) este urmatorul pas si de fapt este un pas foarte mare. Ideea este ca administratorii unui host impartesc resursele unui server in mod egal pentru mai multe conturi. Deci tu vei cumpara unul dintre acele conturi si vei beneficia  intotdeauna de aceleasi resurse (virtual 100% din timp) dedicate contului tau. Deci, spre deosebire de hostingul shared, vei avea o memorie RAM dedicata si asta te va ajuta in aplicatiile cu baze de date iar situl va fi mai usor accesibil atunci cand mai multi vizitatori sunt online in acelasi timp. Preturile sunt mai ridicate si incep in jur de vreo 30 de dolari pe luna.

3. Serverul dedicat este tatal (sau mama) gazduirii pe web. Daca ai o gramada de vizitatori atunci iti trebuie un server dedicat. Daca al tau cont shared a fost suspendat (pe motiv de bandwidth, folosire excesiva de resurse, etc) iar VPS-ul s-a impotmolit este timpul sa investesti intr-o cutie dedicata. Preturile variaza mult in functie de memorie, procesor, banda, locatie si alte criterii. Pentru un PIII poti plati cam $60 pe luna.

Hosting Gratuit Versus Hosting Platit 

Se merita hosting-ul gratuit? Raspunsul este da atunci cand aveti timp de pierdut si nu ganditi paginilor voastre ca pe o afacere. Dar daca ganditi sa aveti un “sit” respectabil e obligatoriu sa aveti domeniu si hosting profesional. Asta ca sa nu amintesc de acele bannere si texte care vin de la provider-ul de hosting gratuit.

Eu am avut cateva experiente mai mult sau mai putin placute cu cateva companii de gazduire, hosting. Pana in prezent am folosit serviciile urmatoarelor host-uri: 1and1Hosting, Hostway, Hostcolor, Dot5Hosting, MPHosting, Servage.net, MaxterHost.com.

Hostway este o companie de categorie si preturile sunt putin piperate pentru Romania. Dar in general asta nu prea conteaza, hosting-ul nu are frontiere. Hostway gazduieste pe scara larga pentru afaceri mari dar nu numai. Au avut succes mare dar ca marile companii uita de clienti. Asta a fost una din marile mele nemultumiri: serviciul lor cu clientii care scartaie rau de tot. Am avut cateva probleme si cu site uptime insa in ultima vreme se pare ca si-au mai revenit, probabil din pricina criticilor si rating-ului. Una in alta merita sa investesti daca ai un site de business.

Alta e povestea cu 1and1.com Si ei sunt o companie mare care are hosting in UK si USA. Dar spre deosebire de Hostway serviciul lor cu clientii e de nota 10! Si ofera mai mult pentru un pret mai mic. Am cateva site-uri gazduite cu ei. Si prezentele pagini “www.laurentiu.org” sunt gazduite pe 1and1. Va recomand cu multa caldura serviciile lor.

Pentru $1.95 pe luna iti ofera: 100 MB Space, 1 GB Bandwidth, MySQL, PHP, Cpanel cu o multime de script-uri si 99.9% Uptime Guarantee. Au multe programe pe care le poti instala doar cu un click chiar daca nu esti super in ale construirii de web. Si pe deasupra pot gazdui site de adult.

MaxterHost a fost si este o surpriza placuta pentru mine. Este un provider destul de mic din Germania dar are serverele plasate in centre de date cu viteza mare in Europa precum si Statele Unite. Oferta lor cea mai atractiva este cea de server Semi-Dedicat.
